Building setbacks, fence regulations, and zoning requirements for Halifax County.
Setback requirements determine how far structures must be from property lines. These minimums apply to most residential construction in unincorporated Halifax County.
Setbacks vary by zoning district. Front yards: 15-40 ft depending on district. Side yards: 8-15 ft (15-35 ft when abutting street). Rear yards: typically 20% of mean lot depth not exceeding 30 ft, or fixed at 15-30 ft. Accessory buildings must be 3 ft from rear/side lot lines, 8-10 ft from principal building, 15 ft from street lines, and not located in required front/side yards. Building setback line measured from dedicated right-of-way, or 70 ft from road center if no recorded right-of-way exists.
