What an acre actually is
An acre is a unit of land area equal to exactly 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters. There are 640 acres in a square mile, and 10 square chains in an acre — an old surveying unit you still see referenced in deeds today.
The acre comes from medieval England, where it was defined as the amount of land a single farmer with one ox could plow in a day. That practical origin is why the shape was never fixed: it was measured as a long, narrow strip — traditionally one furlong (660 feet) long by one chain (66 feet) wide. Multiply those and you get the same 43,560 square feet we use now.
Because of that history, an acre is an amount of area, not a particular shape. A one-acre lot can be a near-perfect square of about 209 feet on a side, a long ribbon running back from a road, or an irregular polygon following a creek or ridge line.
