Georgia trespass and posting laws
What makes land legally posted in Georgia?
Posting is not required: hunting on someone else's land without the landowner's permission is illegal, posted or not. If the land is posted, DNR says you must get written permission.
No statutory sign size or spacing for hunting purposes. Power line, gas line, railroad and other rights-of-way need written landowner permission, and hunting from a stand or platform attached to a transmission tower counts as trespassing.

Does Georgia have a purple paint law?
No. Georgia has no purple-paint posting law. Bills to create one (SB 159 in 2017–18, HB 1099 in 2023–24) died in the legislature, and no purple-paint bill was introduced in the 2025–26 session.
Bill status from the Georgia General Assembly (HB 1099 of 2023–24 stalled in Senate Judiciary on 3/4/2024; SB 159 of 2017–18 stalled in the House). A search of the 2025–26 Regular Session and 2026 Special Session found no purple-paint bill. The 2026–27 DNR regulations don't mention paint marking. Re-check each session.

Do you need written permission to hunt private land in Georgia?
Verbal permission is enough on unposted land, but if the land is posted DNR says you must obtain written permission. You also need written landowner permission to hunt power-line, gas-line, railroad and other rights-of-way, and to hunt deer or feral hogs over bait on private land.
Statutory details (who must be notified, family-member exemptions) are in O.C.G.A. § 27-3-1; this entry follows the DNR's current regulations summary.

Can you retrieve a deer or a hunting dog from posted land in Georgia?
No. DNR lists hunting without the landowner's permission as unlawful and the regulations give no exception for following wounded game onto someone else's land, so get permission first. Separately, killing or crippling game without making a reasonable effort to retrieve it is illegal.
Contact the landowner, or a game warden if you can't reach them.

Georgia licenses, hunter education and Sunday hunting
Do you need a hunting license to hunt your own land in Georgia?
Yes. Residents don't need a hunting license or Big Game License to hunt their own land, or land owned by immediate family living in the same household. Non-resident landowners must buy a non-resident license.
Resident landowners still need the free GA Waterfowl & Migratory Bird License for migratory birds, and a Federal Duck Stamp (16+) for waterfowl. Hunter education isn't required to hunt your own land either.

A short-term Apprentice Hunting License requires no hunter education. Not required to hunt your own land or a parent's/guardian's land in the same household. Courses from any state or Canadian province are accepted.
